Bocchi and Pocchi are no ordinary pair of socks. They are the best of friends, but one night Pocchi disappears! Can these woolly friends ever find each other again? A charming and unusual tale, illustrated in soft pencil colours. Undoubtedly a modern classic.

Noriko Matsubara is a new illustrator born in Japan and Bocchi and Pocchi : A Tale of Two Socks is her first picture book. The inspiration for the story came from her childhood as she would watch her grandmother regularly darning socks and wondering what might happen to them.

The humble sock will never seem the same after finishing this eye-catching picture book

Lancashire Evening Post review by Pam Norfolk

Bocchi and Pocchi and the Bird

Woolly sock friends Bocchi and Pocchi are proving a popular pair of foot-hugging heroes as they jump into action to save a bird in distress.

The adventures of Bocchi and Pocchi are knitting together perfectly for Japanese-born author and illustrator Noriko Matsubara after the success of her first book, A Tale of Two Socks.

Matsubara, who includes a pattern to knit your own Bocchi and Pocchi socks at the end of this charmingly illustrated book, found the inspiration for her stories from her childhood when she would sit and watch her grandmother darn socks and make up stories.

Here the two socks meet an injured bird who can’t fly back to her nest. Helped by a friendly spider, together with Grandma mouse, the knit one, purl one pals put their best feet forward and eventually manage to help the bird to their home and a place in their cosy sock drawer. And when they awake in the morning they find some unexpected guests have arrived…

A wonderfully quirky story about a two truly close-knit friends!

Bocchi and Pocchi’s Big Surprise

Bocchi and Pocchi, two close-knit sock friends, have become a shoo-in success for inventive picture book author and illustrator Noriko Matsubara.

This is the third outing for the woolly playmates whose footloose adventures were inspired by Matsubara’s childhood in Japan when she would sit and watch her grandmother darn socks and make up stories.

Here we find Bocchi and Pocchi more than a little surprised to find a caterpillar on their table one morning… and enjoying a cabbage for breakfast! They try to persuade Caterpillar that sandwiches or ice cream would be far tastier but he assures them he’s happy to eat cabbage for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Very soon the three of them are firm friends so when Caterpillar disappears one morning Bocchi and Pocchi are very worried. Grandma Mouse reassures them that all will be well and sure enough Caterpillar reappears with yet another surprise for his friends… he’s a butterfly!

Matsubara’s delightful story, packed with her colourful, eye-catching illustrations, includes a charming little musical sing-along celebration of Twirly Socks at the end of the book. You can bet your boots that this lovable pair of socks will be back…
